Introducing Willia Lemoine Parkerson
47th Audubon Pilgrimage Chair
Willia Lemoine Parkerson, chairman of the 2018 Audubon Pilgrimage, is a lifelong resident of West Feliciana Parish. She has been married to Bill Parkerson for thirty-seven years, and they have two children, William and Sarah. Willia served the West Feliciana Parish School System for over three decades as a teacher and cheer coach and is now retired. During her career, she was recognized as Teacher of the Year. She currently serves as president of the parent organization for West Feliciana Middle School and is a passionate and dedicated volunteer to the West Feliciana cheerleaders. A Vol N Cheer program, which has been nationally recognized for its commitment to service on the local and state level, was implemented with her leadership. She is also an active volunteer for the West Feliciana Education Foundation. As a sixth-generation member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, she is currently involved with the church youth and education program.
Willia comes from a long line of educators. Bill, better known as Coach Parkerson, is the former head football coach for West Feliciana High School and now serves as Assistant Principal at Bains Elementary. Both of their children have followed in their parents’ footsteps as coaches and teachers, and Willia’s parents and siblings are all educators. With such a strong background of educators, she feels preserving our local history is vital to future generations.
Willia Parkerson believes that we all have roots that bring memories of days gone by. She is highlighting music this year throughout the pilgrimage to honor her father, known as Mr. Rodney, who touched the lives of so many in our parish. Mr. Rodney was a teacher that shared his knowledge and love of music. The local Arts for All of West Feliciana Parish will be instrumental in enhancing this added feature to the Audubon Pilgrimage.
Willia served as a Jr. Hostess for the first Audubon Pilgrimage dating back to 1971 and has been active in different capacities throughout the years. She is the third generation serving as chairman of the Audubon Pilgrimage. Her aunt, Lucille Leake, was a founding board member of the West Feliciana Historical Society and the first pilgrimage chairman. Her mother, Margaret Lemoine, served as the 1979 chairman, and numerous cousins and an aunt have also served as chairmen.
Her rich heritage and love for her community and family are the themes that make the weekend of events a harmonious package for everyone. She is inviting all former Felicianians “to come home for the weekend” and is eager to welcome guests from near and far to see why We Love it here in St. Francisville. She knows that upon leaving West Feliciana Parish, pilgrims will certainly realize this community is a hidden treasure. The hills will be alive with music, art, dance, authentic circa 1820’s costumes, historic homes, churches, gardens, a rural homestead site, a cemetery and birding tour, a wine and cheese reception, and a starlit soiree.
